What are AI Overviews?

AI Overviews (formerly called the Search Generative Experience or SGE) is Google's AI-generated summary feature that appears at the top of search results for many queries — synthesizing information from multiple web sources into a single, direct answer block, above the traditional organic results.

Launched broadly in 2024, AI Overviews represent one of the most significant changes to Google Search in decades. Instead of showing ten blue links for a query, Google now often provides an AI-synthesized answer at the top of the page, followed by cited sources and then traditional results below.

What AI Overviews Mean for Websites

What AI Overviews mean for websites: Reduced click-through rates for some queries (for informational queries, AI Overviews may satisfy the user's need without a click) and a New visibility opportunity (sites cited in AI Overview source boxes gain prominent visibility — sometimes more prominent than traditional position 1 results).

How to get cited in AI Overviews: Write clear, direct answers to specific questions, use structured content with explicit question-and-answer patterns and FAQ schema markup, build authority in your topic area (see Topical authority), earn high-quality backlinks and brand mentions that signal trustworthiness to Google's AI systems. This connects directly to AEO and GEO strategies.

AI Overviews currently appear for roughly 15–20% of all Google searches. At Appsrow, we structure our clients' Webflow content to maximize the likelihood of AI Overview citations.
