What is White Space?

White space (also called negative space) is the empty, unmarked area between and around design elements on a page — the breathing room that surrounds text, images, buttons, and other components.

The name is a misnomer: white space doesn't have to be white. It's any area of a design that is free from content — it could be a light gray section background, a dark margin, or the space between lines of text. What matters is what's not there.

What White Space Does

What white space does: Creates visual breathing room that reduces cognitive load, groups related elements and separates unrelated ones, directs attention to what remains (less visual noise means key content stands out more — reinforcing visual hierarchy), signals quality and sophistication, and improves readability.

Types of white space: Macro white space (the large empty areas between major sections and layout zones) and Micro white space (the small spaces between letters, lines of text, list items, and interface components).

At Appsrow, we design with intentional white space — understanding that what you leave out is as important as what you put in.
